About Jerod

I was born in an infinitesimally small town in the middle of Utah where not much happened. Even as an infant I was bored, and began passing the time by teaching myself to undo my own diapers so I could experience the joy of offending people.

By the age of seventeen, I sold my soul and was granted escape from my conservative hometown. In exchange for said soul, I agreed to become the kind of writer who would shock, mortify, and offend folks–just as I’d done as a tot, but this time, I’d have a larger audience. I jumped on it. I not only agreed but I signed that document faster than the devil could say, “Wait! I have a pen, you idiot! You don’t have to sign it in blood! That’s a myth!” Suffice it to say, I was a bloody and embarrassed mess, but the deal was sealed. I was to be a writer…

At first, I didn’t know what this meant exactly, so I just began blindly writing on a daily basis–poetry, short stories, plot concepts, whatever–even though I had no clue what I was doing. I figured if I just kept putting the energy out into the universe, something would eventually manifest.

And it did.

I began meeting other writers who showed me the ropes, opened the right doors for me, and introduced me to the many pleasures of the pen. (Many of these writers also lack legal rights to their souls, by the way, but I’m not one to name names…)

In 2012, my first novel, Beautiful Monster, a collaborative effort, was accepted for publication by Damnation Books. I wrote this novel under the name Jared S. Anderson, but due to marketing and advertising conflicts, I’ve since been writing under Jerod Scott.

Things are good. I couldn’t be happier with the success of Beautiful Monster. I love my publisher, and I’ve met (and become friends with) many of my heroes–the ones who wrote the books I used to read back in the days when I dreamed of being a writer. And none of them have disappointed me. It’s more than I ever hoped for.

I started this blog before I got published, and I did it with the intention of writing about the process of publication. Publication came faster than I expected so I’ve since maintained the site, and have had tons of fun with it.

Here, you can find interviews with some of the true greats who have been kind enough to answer my questions. Also, there is advice for budding authors, information and news for fans and readers, and fun and games with other authors. I’ve even thrown in some of my poetry for good measure.

Take a look around, stay a while, and check things out. This is my journal–from the beginning–of my life as a writer.

And by the way, the devil eventually gave me my soul back… and I quote: “You can have it back. It’s got too many holes in it. It’s just too creepy for me.”

Enjoy…

    Jared,

Years and years ago, I sent off four stories to the New Yorker. Unasked and unbidden. I didn’t know any better. After about 3 months, three of them came back to me in the return envelopes I had somehow managed to include with the stories. A polite and stock, “thank you, but no, thank you” was enclosed. Then, about 6 months later came an actual letter from the New Yorker literary folks. It said, basically, “this story made it through all our fiction editors; at the end of the day, we had to make tough choices and this one didn’t make it…but…we loved it – try again.” I never did. This is all to say, hang in there. I now know these things take way longer than the waiter can stand. All will be well. She meant what she said. Because, she is paid to. And you are a writer.

I am Wrexie’s sister, by the way.
